IMPHAL, Mar 11 : Denying allegations of Government hospital doctors practicing at Shija Hospital, SHRI founder Chairman and Managing Director Dr Khundongbam Palin has appealed the Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group) MC Unification to reconsider and withdraw the directive calling for the shutdown of the hospital.
Speaking to the press during a briefing at the hospital today, Dr Khundongbam Palin urged the outfit to withdraw the directive of March 10 for hospital shutdown within 48 hours and surrender of the hospital authority within 5 days.
Highlighting the serious humanitarian impact of disruption in hospital services, he said the directive has caused worries among patients receiving treatment as well as emergency department.
140 patients undergo dialysis at the hospital per day. There cannot be a bigger crime than shutting down a facility where ailing patients are treated, he said.
The allegation that doctors of Government hospitals are practicing at Shija Hospital is completely baseless. Currently, there are 299 full-time doctors and 1800 caregivers dedicated solely to serving patients at Shija Hospital.
Addressing another allegation that the hospital earns money by giving oxygen to "dead patients", he said the claim may have been raised due to a miscommunication.
The life of a brain-dead person whose organs, such as heart, lungs, kidney etc are functioning, cannot be abruptly ended.
Mercy killing is not prevalent in the country. When a patient is declared brain dead, then the family is consulted about the next step, whether to continue at the hospital or to take the patient back home.
In many cases, families request a ventilator to ensure that their loved one continues to breathe at least till they reach home. Others request the doctors to keep the patient alive for a day or two longer till their children or family members from outside the State return home.
Brain death marks the point of no return for patients, they cannot breathe unassisted. A few of such patients have also donated their organs, said Kh Palin.
He reminded everyone that Shija Hospital has served the people of Manipur for nearly 40 years without shutting their doors even once.
At the same time, the hospital remains open to addressing any concerns through peaceful and constructive dialogue, he said. At the press briefing, the family member of a dialysis patient at Shija Hospital appealed for withdrawal of the directive to shut down the hospital stating that it has caused anxiety among the patients and their families.
