IMPHAL, Mar 11: A person from Thawai village has been injured, several have been detained and some are missing, the Shangkai Village Authority has claimed, accusing "Tangkhul volunteers" of firing upon "cultivators" and burning "jhum huts".
In a statement, the village authority said it strongly condemns the incident at Thawai village, where Tangkhul volunteers allegedly opened  fire upon cultivators in the fields.
Following the incident, several villagers were detained, and many of them continue to remain in detention. It has also been reported that a number of jhum huts belonging to the villagers were set on fire by Tangkhul volunteers, alleged  the Shangkai village authority.
"Further, in a separate incident, two individuals who had gone to repair a water pipeline were allegedly fired upon by Tangkhul volunteers. As of now, both individuals remain missing and their whereabouts are still unknown," it said.
Additionally, one person from Thowai [Thawai] Kuki village sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the incident and has been sent to the hospital for medical treatment, it said.
Members of the public have stopped vehicles plying along the Ukhrul road, demanding safe and immediate release of those who have been detained and clarification regarding those who remain missing, the village authority said. It urged the Govt and authorities concerned to urgently intervene and ensure the safety, protection, and safe release of "our villagers who are currently being detained." It urged the Govt to locate the missing individuals at the earliest, and take immediate steps to prevent escalation and restore peace and security in the area.
