IMPHAL, Mar 13 : Chief Minister Y Khemchand has stated that the Government is working to deploy electric buses across Imphal city under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme.
Responding to a cut motion raised by Congress MLA K Ranjit during today's Assembly session, the Chief Minister, who also holds the Transport portfolio, acknowledged that the roads in Manipur are not widening in proportion to the increasing number of vehicles.
He also mentioned that double parking often causes traffic congestion, emphasising that vehicle owners should exercise common sense when parking.
To reduce traffic congestion, bus services have been launched across 12 districts with designated routes, he said.
Khemchand also stated that the Inter-State Bus Terminus at Khuman Lampak has been operational since January 26 this year, after a considerable period of non-operation.
He went on to state that the construction of the Inter-State Truck Terminus (ISTT) at Sekmai and its approach road is nearing completion.
Once completed, traffic congestion will be reduced to some extent, he said.
Regarding the scrapping of old vehicles, the Chief Minister stated that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has approved the project, and applications have been invited from firms for its implementation under the PPP model.
However, not many firms are interested in the project, as there are not many vehicles to scrap in Manipur, he said, adding that the Government will explore possible solutions.
In many European and Southeast Asian countries, people are not allowed to purchase vehicles unless they have garages, he said, adding that the Government will explore whether such a policy is implemented in any Indian States.
If any Indian State has adopted this policy, the State Government will consider what can be done in Manipur, he added.
He further said that the State Government is working to improve the transport system in Manipur and also implement the PM-eBus Sewa scheme.
Congress MLA K Ranjit, raising the cut motion, stated that traffic congestion has become a regular phenomenon in Imphal.
He also stated that Imphal has become one of the ugliest and dirtiest cities.
According to Government reports, Manipur had 5,86,729 vehicles as of September 2024, a sharp increase from around 3.6 lakh vehicles in 2020, he said.
Noting that the roads in Imphal city have not been widened in nearly the last 10 years, the Congress MLA pointed out that it is not feasible to widen roads every year.
He suggested implementing a policy to regulate the increase in vehicles instead.
The Congress MLA also stated that irresponsible parking is one of the major causes of traffic congestion in Imphal city.
Stating that the frequent movement of auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws in large numbers leads to traffic congestion in the Khwairamband Keithel area, he asked what policy the Government has implemented to address the issue.
