IMPHAL, Mar 13 : Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand has claimed that Manipur recorded the lowest inflation rate in 2025 as compared to other States of India.
Responding to a query raised by Congress MLA Okram Surjakumar in the State Assembly today, Y Khemchand said that the State’s inflation rate was 1.17 per cent while the National inflation was 2.20 per cent.
The State recorded high inflation rates in 2023 and 2024 on account of the violent crisis and reduced movement of goods carriers on highways, particularly trucks.
The State’s inflation reached 7.96 per cent in 2023 against the National figure of 5.56 per cent. It was 7.83 per cent in 2024 against the all-India rate of 4.95 per cent, Khemchand said.
Saying that there are reports of many big businesses leaving Manipur and moving to Guwahati, Kolkata etc, and even Shija Hospital is on the verge of becoming an NPA (non-performing asset), Surjakumar urged the State Government to persuade the Central Board of Direct Tax (CBDT) to waive off Central taxes for a period of 10 months so that the businesses can make a jump-start.
He also urged the State Government to take up necessary measures so as to enhance the purchasing power of the general public and maintain a financial flow.
In his reply, the Chief Minister stated that the Government has been working to pay employees’ salaries regularly so as to maintain a financial flow among the public.
The question of waiving off CBDT for a period of 10 months is a prerogative of the Central but the State Government will look into it, Khemchand said.
To another query of Okram Surjakumar, the Chief Minister informed the House that 5569 cases of appointment under the Die-in-Harness scheme are pending.
