IMPHAL, Mar 15: The ultimatum served by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) on February 12, 2026 to apprehend the perpetrators of the murder of two Kuki-Zo villagers within 48 hours has been withdrawn.
According to a press release issued by CoTU, it resolved to withdraw the ultimatum after consultation with all stakeholders including the conglomerate of “All Kuki Civil Organisations” within Sadar Hills based on the assurance given by the authority concerned to hand over the case to the highest investigation agency of the country.
The murder case of Thangin Baite of Thawai Kuki village and Thangboimang Khongsai of Shangkai village should be a litmus test for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to fulfil its mandate for fair and unbiased investigation without due political influence or interference either from the State or the Centre, it said.
CoTU asserted that the Kuki and Zo communities will stand by the rule of law for effective verdict to deter such armed gangsters from running amok in the region ever again.
While sharing the anguish and pain of both the families of Thangin Baite and Thangboimang Khongsai, CoTU has appealed to the public and civil organisations to refrain from inciting or peddling unwarranted narration which may unsettle the already fragile peace in the region.
