IMPHAL, Mar 16 : Licensing of guns will be verified for adherence to rules, said Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in the State Assembly today.
The Chief Minister said this in response to a calling attention motion raised by Sugnu AC MLA K Ranjit Singh on the killing of one Chingakham Malemnganba (51) from Tejpur Awang Leikai in Kakching district on March 13.
MLA K Ranjit said that the incident at Tejpur was a manifestation of the deteriorated law and order situation.
Occurrence of such shooting incidents during the Assembly session is a blot on the dignity of the House, he said.
Responding to the motion, Y Khemchand said a suspect in the case is being questioned by the police and all efforts are on to nab the culprits.
It may take time but all the culprits will be nabbed, he said.
He further stated that too many people in the State have been given licenses to own guns.
The State will verify licensing to ensure adherence to rules, he said.
It may be mentioned that the Joint Action Committee formed in connection with the killing of Malemnganba has urged the State Government and authorities concerned to arrest all the culprits involved in the case by March 16.
The JAC has said that the body of the deceased will not be claimed until all the persons involved in the shooting are arrested. The suspect arrested has been identified as Salam Oken Meitei (39), an IRB personnel from the same locality, Tejpur. He has remanded to police custody for 10 days.
