IMPHAL, Mar 16: One of the persons who was found dead following the March 12 shooting incident involving Tangkhul volunteers and armed Kuki militants was not a resident of Thawai Kuki hamlet, claimed Thoyee (Thawai) Village Authority today.
There is no record of the deceased identified as Thengin Baite, son of Late Sempao Baite, in the electoral rolls of Thawai Kuki hamlet and 2025 Hill House Assessment records, asserted the Thawai VA in a statement.
It said Thawai Kuki is a hamlet under the administrative jurisdiction of Thoyee (Thawai) Tangkhul village.
As the competent local authority, the Thoyee (Thawai) Village Authority is responsible for compiling and submitting census-related information, including Hill House Assessment records, received from Thawai Kuki hamlet to the relevant Government departments from time to time, it added.
Upon verification of the 2025 Hill House Assessment records and the electoral rolls, it has been established that neither Thengin Baite nor his father, Late Sempao Baite, is listed as a resident of Thawai Kuki village.
This indicates that the individual concerned does not belong to Thawai Kuki and was may be from another village, said the VA.
It further asserted that the Thawai Kuki has no right over the land and hence can't offer land it doesn't own to Assam Rifles or the Indian Army.
While Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul has called for permanent station of Assam Rifles and Indian Army, the chief of the Kuki hamlet allegedly offered 50 acres of land for this purpose without the knowledge or consent of Thoyee (Thawai Tangkhul) Village, the legitimate owner of the land, it said.
"We strongly oppose this unauthorized proposal and warn against any such actions undertaken without our prior approval," said the VA.
