IMPHAL, Mar 16: Surveys to assess damages caused by hailstorms have started for providing immediate relief, said Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in the Assembly today.
He said this responding to a calling attention motion raised by MLA K Meghachandra in the Assembly.
Raising the motion, MLA K Meghachandra asked if the Government and its departments concerned have initiated processes to provide relief to people affected by the recent hailstorms.
Many houses, properties, crops and poultry have been damaged by the recent hailstorms, he said, asking if the Agriculture and Horticulture Department in particular have taken any steps to provide relief to affected farmers.
While it is beyond human capacity to stop natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, a proper warning system could alert people and avert major disasters, Meghachandra said, asking if the departments concerned had warned the people about the hailstorms that wreaked havoc across several districts.
Responding to the motion, Yumnam Khemchand said Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts have been instructed to provide immediate relief.
He said the Government has taken up steps to provide fast and immediate relief. Waiting for Government processes would take time. To do away with such lengthy processes and provide immediate relief, Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to purchase locally available materials, he said. Initial immediate reliefs will be procured by the DCs for distributions, he added. Surveys to assess damages have started. Geo-tagged phototropic records are being taken as part of the surveys, he said. As soon as the surveys are completed, relief packages will be released, he said.
