IMPHAL, Mar 16 : The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has formally petitioned the Chief Minister, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Assam Rifles (AR) from the State.
In a representation submitted to the Chief Minister today, the student body accused the paramilitary force (Assam Rifles) of "unethical" coordination with Kuki militant groups and severe mistreatment of the Naga populace.
The representation outlines a series of recent incidents that have led to a breakdown of trust between the Naga community and the paramilitary force.
ANSAM highlighted three specific events in support of their assertion:
February 22, 2025: Alleged "unethical movement" of Assam Rifles alongside ethnic militant organizations in Senapati district during early morning hours, creating "fear psychosis" among locals.
March 11, 2026 : The dismantling of Naga village bunkers and gates at Waphong Inthan and Inpui Naga village by the AR. ANSAM labelled this an "abhorrent act" and a violation of community safety rights.
March 11, 2026: The reported abduction of 21 Tangkhul Naga civilians, including women and elderly, by Kuki militants from Shangkai village.
ANSAM alleged this occurred "right under the nose of the Assam Rifles," raising serious questions regarding the force's accountability. In addition to the removal of the Assam Rifles, ANSAM has also called for the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA).
"The blatant and continuous imposition of AFSPA in Naga homeland negates the spirit of the Indo-Naga peace process and reflects the insincerity on the part of the Government of India," the statement read.
It urged the Manipur Government to replace the Assam Rifles with "neutral and professional" military forces.
They further requested that these pressing security concerns be discussed and resolved during the ongoing 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Copies of the representation have been submitted to the Home Minister, the Security Advisor to the Government of Manipur, and the president of the Naga Legislators Forum for immediate cognizance.
