IMPHAL, Mar 17 : After hailstorms devastated standing crops across several districts in recent days, members of Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Farmers Wing and several farmers' bodies inspected agricultural fields at Thoubal and Kakching district today.
The team led by COCOMI Farmers Wing convenor L Shyam Khu-mam visited Thoubal district's Langathel Walang Pokpi Loukon and Kakching district's Wabagai Awang Loukon.
During the inspection, Shyam said the Government and its Agriculture and Horticulture Departments should take immediate steps to compensate the farmers affected by the hailstorms.
Manipur is increasingly experiencing extreme weather conditions and the calamities they bring. The departments concerned of the Government should conduct awareness programmes and educate farmers about crop insurance, which may compensate farmers for their losses, Shyam said.
He said the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments should conduct surveys to assess damage and compensate the farmers at the earliest.
At Langathel Walang Pokpi Loukon, progressive farmer Sagolsem Amuba said more than 270 Paris of standing crops worth Rs 9 crore have been damaged by the hailstorms, affecting more than 200 farmers.
The crops damaged by the hailstorms at the Langathel Walang Pokpi Loukon include pumpkin, cucumber, sunflower, watermelon, gourd, sponge gourd, tomato etc.
Many farmers had borrowed money and taken loans. Without proper compensation, they will not be able to repay the money, he said.
Several acres of standing crops at the Wabagai area were also damaged in the recent hailstorms.
Kakching district progressive farmer Sagolsem Amuba said he has lost standing crops worth Rs 1 lakh.
The crops damaged by hailstorms at Wabagai included cabbage, tomato, pepper, and pulses.
