IMPHAL, Mar 19 : As part of the ongoing mass movement against carrying out census operations before identifying illegal immigrants, a protest march was taken out today to the office of Directorate of Census, Porompat.
Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) members who took part in the protest march were enraged when they were told by some officials of the Census Directorate that census operations of each community will be carried out by officials belonging to the particular community.
The enraged CJFD members warned that they will launch strong protest agitation if the Government sticks to the plan to let officials of a community carry out census operations of their own community.
At around 12 noon, a number of people gathered at Soibam Leikai, Nongmeibung and Kongpal and marched toward the office of the Directorate of Census.
The protesters marching from Soibam Leikai and Nongmeibung were blocked by a large number of police personnel and Central security forces led by the Imphal East SP at Porompat crossing.
The protesters which started from Kongpal side were also blocked by security forces at Kongpal Iranpham bridge.
Later, 18 of the protesters were allowed to meet officials of the Census Directorate.
Speaking to media persons after talking with officials of the Census Directorate, CJFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said that Manipur, at present, is facing many critical issues on account of incessant influx of immigrants over the decades.
Even before the Meitei-Kuki conflict has been resolved, tension between Nagas and Kukis has been escalating, he said.
According to Jeetendra Ningomba, they were told by some officials of the Census Directorate that preparations have been made for Kuki officials to carry out census operations in Kuki areas, Naga officials in Naga areas and Meitei officials in Meitei areas.
This arrangement is outrageous and unacceptable, he asserted.
