IMPHAL, Mar 17 : The Sinakeithei Village Authority and the Central Working Committee of Tangkhul Naga Foothills' Organisation have urged the Government to immediately dismantle an illegal bunkers installed by the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) at Lungter foothill in Sinakeithei.
The bunkers are located "barely 500 metres" from the residential area of Sinakeithei Tangkhul village.
The Sinakeithei Village Authority, in an ultimatum issued today, said the Kuki militants have brazenly constructed bunkers and makeshift camps within the jurisdiction of Sinakeithei Village, gradually and systematically closing in on residential sectors, and posing a direct threat to the safety of the civilian population.
The Leplen-Tingpibung via Sinakeithei Road beneath the Lungter Mountain Range, has been illegally occupied. Armed militants from T Gamnom Camp and Mt Sinai Camp are manning checkpoints 24x7, restricting free movement, said the Sinakeithei VA.
Even Nepali cow-herders have come under gunfire from the said bunkers. Unprovoked firings using automatic rifles intending to cause psychological unrest among the local populace has also spiked since March 12, it said.
Even as Church services have also been disrupted and independent drone surveillance has detected bunkers, security forces are reported to have not detected any bunkers in the area. Such lapses are indications of a foul-play or a deliberate attempt to obscure the reality of the situation, said the VA.
If necessary actions are not taken at the earliest, the local population will no longer remain silent observers. Any damage, loss of life or escalation of violence that arises from this negligence will rest solely on the shoulders of the Government of India," said the VA.
The Central Working Committee of Tangkhul Naga Foothills' Organisation too echoed the same concern and said the cadres of the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) operating from T Gamnom Camp (Lungtin Sub-Block) and Mt Sinai Camp have openly violated the ground rules of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement.
Since March 15, 2026, the KLA cadres have carried out repeated and unprovoked firing, endangering civilian lives, it said.
Villagers are unable to tend to fields, retrieve their cattle, or carry out basic livelihood activities due to the constant threat of gunfire. The situation has reached an intolerable level amounting to a grave humanitarian and security crisis, said the Central Working Committee of the TNFO.
The Village Authority of the Sinakeithei Tangkhul village has approached the 4th Mahar Regiment, but no concrete action has been taken to remove the bunkers. This continued inaction has only emboldened unlawful elements and deepened the sense of insecurity among the villagers, said the committee, urging the State and the Central Government to immediately dismantle the illegal bunker, it said.
