IMPHAL, Mar 18: Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has raised a call for effective implementation of the Manipur Pony Conservation & Development Policy, 2016 to save and conserve the rare breed.
Making a Special Mention late last night on the floor of the Parliament, he highlighted its historical significance, stating that the origin of the game of polo can be traced back to the Manipuri Pony.
It is a symbol of Manipur's identity, history, tradition and culture and a source of pride for the people of the State.
However, due to gaps in the implementation of the Manipur Pony Conservation & Development Policy, 2016, and various other factors, the population of the breed has dropped below 1000, noted the RS MP.
More recently, a disturbing issue came to light where the ponies were stolen and sold for their meat.
On July 22, 2022 session of the Parliament, the RS MP had pitched a Pony Project sponsored by the Centre in a Special Mention, for the preservation of the Manipuri Pony.
Again on January 27, 2026, a memorandum was submitted to the Manipur Governor to save the rare and endangered breed.
Regarding the illicit sale of pony meat, the RS MP called it heartbreaking and unacceptable in Manipuri society.
Such acts violate the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960 and Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006.
Under such circumstances, Leishemba Sanajaoba has urged the Union Government to direct the State Government to ensure effective implementation of the Manipur Pony Conservation & Development Policy, 2016.
Further, he urged the Centre to take up concrete steps to save the Manipuri Pony from such illegal trade and prevent the rare breed from disappearing from the soil of Manipur.
