Imphal, Mar 18 : The All Manipur Nupi Marup (AMNM) has urged authorities to postpone the 2026 general census until complete normalcy and free movement are restored across the State.
In a press release, the AMNM stated that while they do not wish to hinder the census process, the ongoing conflict in the State, which has lasted for three years, requires a complete resolution first.
The AMNM emphasized that the census should only proceed after internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in various relief camps have been safely resettled in their homes and free movement is permitted in all districts.
The organisation expressed concern that proceeding with the census against the public’s wishes, under pressure from the Union Government, could lead to undesirable incidents.
The AMNM also called for correcting glaring errors from the 2001 and 2011 censuses, citing implausible district population surges of 123%, 140%, and 169%. The AMNM insisted these discrepancies must be fixed before proceeding.
