UKHRUL, Mar 18: The Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS), while condemning continued disturbance and blocking of NH-202 Imphal-Ukhrul Road, has urged the three Tangkhul MLAs to take immediate steps to secure the highway.
The Tangkhul MLAs should make their stand clear and take steps to ensure safety and security of the people along the Highway within 24 hours, it said.
The abduction of 21 passengers from the Imphal- Ukhrul highway has shaken public confidence in the Central security forces deployed in the region, it said.
The failure to ensure the safety and security of civilians on the road has angered the public, and their trust in the Central security forces has eroded, it added.
The NH-202 Imphal-Ukhrul Road remains the only lifeline for over 2 lakh people of Ukhrul and Kam-jong districts. The disruption to free movement has gravely affected the livelihood and daily activities of the people, said the TKS.
Trade and various other services including medical, educational and essential services have been affected by the blockade, it added.
It stressed that the entire community of Ukhrul region have been forced to suffer and bear aggression of immigrants who were allowed to stay in the region on humanitarian grounds.
"The people of the region have always upheld humanitarian values and extended compassion in difficult times. However, our humanity cannot allow us to continue suffering under such circumstances. The goodwill extended on humanitarian grounds must never be turned into a threat against the very community that offered it," it said.
While the State Government has failed to provide a firm assurance, the TKS said, the three Tangkhul MLAs must make their stand clear about the blockade that is being imposed by Kukis on the highway.
The silence or inaction of the Tangkhul MLAs at this critical situation is not acceptable, it said.
The TKS also called on the public to remain vigilant and prepare for "a democratic agitation to fight collectively for our rights, security, justice, and the restoration of safe and uninterrupted passage along NH-202 road."
