IMPHAL, Mar 20 : Is the Kongba River now more polluted than the Nambul River ? A serious concern has arisen, as people are now reluctant to use water from Kongba River, even for basic activities like washing their hands.
The Kongba River which passes through several Constituencies in Imphal East like Khundrakpam, Khurai, Kshetrigao, Thongju is considered one of the major rivers of Manipur.
However, as the condition of the river has deteriorated over the years, people are reluctant to even touch the water, let alone use it.
Factors contributing to its deterioration include the indiscriminate dumping of waste and encroachment along its banks for the construction of community halls, crematoriums, and other structures.
Even as the condition of the river has severely worsened, some local clubs in Imphal East argued that the Government has done nothing to safeguard the river.
They claimed that the condition of Kongba River is even worse than that of Nambul River now.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Laishram Yelhounganba Khuman, an executive member of the Kongba Social Development Organisation and Youth Centre, stated that despite being a major river in the State, the water of Kongba River has become unusable.
He claimed that the Government has done nothing to rejuvenate the river.
While the Government regularly carries out dredging work at Imphal and Nambul Rivers, no such efforts have been made for the Kongba River, he said
This neglect, he said, has led to the deterioration of Kongba River.
Yelhounganba also mentioned that the water of Kongba River, which was once used for bathing and other household activities, is so polluted as the river has become a dumping site for many.
Saying that encroachment along the riverbanks for construction purposes and the dumping of waste have significantly contributed to the deterioration of Kongba River, he asserted that people are now reluctant to even go near the river, let alone use its water.
He urged the Government to address the issue and take the necessary actions to save the river.
