Court takes cognizance of NIA charge sheet

IMPHAL, Mar 23: Special Court NIA Manipur 1 has taken cognizance of a charge sheet filed by NIA Imphal Branch against three accused in connection with the Nambol Sabal ambush which led to the death of two Assam Rifles personnel and injuries to five others on September 19, 2025.
The Special Court also fixed April 1 for furnishing relevant papers of the NIA charge sheet to the accused persons and for further proceedings of the case.
The charge sheet was submitted some days back against Thongram Sada-nanda Singh alias Ngachik alias Purakpa (18) s/o (L) Th Ibungo Singh of Wang-bal Heiruthong Leikai, Khundongbam Ojit Meitei alias Keilal (47) s/o (L) Kh Mani Singh of Awang Leikinthabi Awang Leikai and Irengbam Jugindra Meitei alias Jugin Meitei, aged about 65 years, s/o (L) I Leiren Singh of Keishamthong Top Leirak.
The NIA filed the charge sheet under different sections of BNS 2023, Arms Act, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act 1984, Explosive Substances Act 1908 and UA(P) Act.
Prosecution Sanction under UA(P) Act and Explosive Substances Act were enclosed in the charge sheet.
After perusing the materials on record, the Court took cognizance for the offences under different sections of BNS, UA(P) Act and Arms Act against the three accused persons.
The Court also found sufficient ground for further proceedings against the accused persons and ordered the NIA to furnish relevant papers of the charge sheet to the accused persons,
The Court then remanded all the three accused persons who are presently lodged in jail in judicial custody till the next date.
Five persons were arrested in connection with the Nambol Sabal ambush case.
Apart from the accused persons who are presently lodged in judicial custody, two others namely; Chongtham Mahesh and Laishram Bhopen were also arrested.
However, no charge sheet has been filed against Chongtham Mahesh and Laishram Bhopen.
Chongtham Mahesh is already out on bail while a bail prayer for Laishram Bhopen was allowed on March 18.
On September 19 last year, two personnel of 33 Assam Rifles stationed at Maibam Lotpa Ching were killed and five others sustained injuries in an ambush at Nambol Sabal Leikai along Tiddim Road.
Three days after the incident, Khundongbam Ojit Meitei alias Keilal 47 s/o (L) Kh Mani Singh of Awang Leikinthabi Awang Leikai was arrested by security forces from Kameng, Imphal West under Lamsang police station.
Acting on his disclosure, some arms and ammunition were also recovered by security forces.
