IMPHAL, Mar 24: Imagi Meira and Indigenous People's Forum, Manipur have urged the Government to implement National Register of Citizens (NRC) before conducting any census exercises in Manipur.
Drawing the attention of the Government in a press meet held at Manipur Press Club, Imphal today, Imagi Meira president, Sujata Thokchom  said the implementation of the National Register of Citizens is a must to identify and deport illegal immigrants and pave the way for the conduct of a genuine census.
All the indigenous communities of Manipur want an NRC exercise before census. It is for the benefit of the State and all communities within, she said, demanding a special session of the Assembly on the issue.
Anandi Shimrai, representing Indigenous Peo- ple's Forum, also echoed the same demand. She further commented on the firing incidents at Ukhrul and Kamjong, and asserted that the SoO Kuki militants camps in Naga inhabited areas must be removed for peace to return to the region.
She said Kuki militants have provoked the Nagas on many occasions. Commuters including Nagas along the Imphal-Ukhrul Road have faced difficulties and some have even been abducted and taken hostage in recent weeks, she said.
Implementation of NRC to identify illegal immigrants and abrogation of Suspension of Operations (SoO) may help bring peace and restore normalcy in Manipur, she added.
