IMPHAL, Mar 24 : The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) has announced that a public meeting featuring leaders of various civil society organisations (CSOs) of different communities will take place on March 26 at Kwakeithel Makha Community Hall to discuss the census and a resolution outlining their future course of action will be made public on March 29.
Addressing a programme at Kadangband Part-II today, CJFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba emphasised that they have been urging the relevant authorities to postpone the census operation in Manipur given the exceptional circumstances in the State.
He argued that conducting a population count under such conditions would not produce accurate results.
Claiming that illegal immigrants have been waging a war against indigenous communities for years, Jeetendra Ningomba asserted that these immigrants must first be identified before proceeding with the census.
He also accused the Government of India of cons- piring not only to suppress but to eradicate the indigenous communities.
Stating that they do not oppose the census, he added that the Government, however, must understand the reasons behind the calls for postponing this crucial exercise, which is conducted every ten years.
He stated that illegal immigrants will rob the rights and privileges of indigenous communities if they are wrongly included in the census.
What the people want is to simply conduct the census after identifying illegal immigrants, he said, reasoning that carrying out the census amid the current situation in Manipur will not yield accurate population data.
