IMPHAL, Mar 25: A day after Kuki militants reportedly fired towards civilians in Kamjong district headquarters, a gunfight erupted in the district's Chassad area today.
The gunfight between Kuki militants and Tangkhul village volunteers started at around 5 pm, and was still on after a brief lull, said sources.
Even as the clash was on at Chassad area in Kamjong, Kuki militants reportedly set on fire a shed located on a paddy field at Sinakeithei today. People of Sinakeithei came to know about the arson at about 2.30 pm, said the villagers while talking to this newspaper. The field is located about 1.5 kilometre away from Sinakeithei.
Notably, Kamjong Students' Union (KSU) and several tribal bodies had condemned the Kuki militants firing at the district headquarters yesterday. The militants' firing had forced several Naga families in the vicinity to flee to safer locations. Apart from the Kuki militants firing towards the district headquarters, there were no gunfights in Kamjong yesterday.
Earlier, gunfight between Kuki militants and Tangkhul village volunteers was reported from Ukhrul's Litan area only.
Just 24 hours after the fierce gunfight at Litan area, six bunkers were dismantled at Litan and Mongkot Chephu area today, said police
Litan saw fierce exchanges of fire between Kuki militants and Tangkhul village volunteers yesterday.
The gunfight at Litan area yesterday hurt 3 persons, including two Tang- khul civilians and an individual from the Kuki co- mmunity. Two Kuki indivi-duals were hurt a day earlier.
After the gunfight at Litan area subsided yesterday, security forces repor- tedly dismantled several bunkers in the area and conducted area domination exercises.
At Kamjong today, sources said the situation remains "highly" tense.
Accusing Assam Rifles of aiding Kuki militants, womenfolk reportedly blocked the movement of the security force, said the sources. The fighting was on and there were no reports of any casualties at the time of filing this report.
The tension in Ukhrul which has now reached Kamjong stemmed from an incident where a Tangkhul man was assaulted by members of Kuki community in Litan on February 7.
The assault ignited tension, and later confrontations.
