ZUF (JK), NSCN (IM) clash at Kaiphundai

IMPHAL, Mar 25: A fierce gunfight erupted between suspected cadres of ZUF (JK) and NSCN (IM) at Kaiphundai along Imphal-Jiribam road early this morning.
Sources said the gunfight started at around 2.30 am at Kaiphundai village area, under the jurisdiction of Tousem police station, Nungba sub-division, Tamenglong district.
The exchange of fire lasted till 5 am.
There is no report of any casualties during the gunfight.
The gunfight forced locals nearby to flee for safety and vehicular movement along the National Highway was halted for some hours.
The two groups have also engaged in gunfights in the past.
The All Zeliangrong Students Union (AZSU-AMN) has, meanwhile, urged both groups to cease all hostilities and engage in peaceful talks.
In a statement, the AZSU-AMN said it is deeply anguished and pained by the repeated firing incidents between the two groups at Kaiphundai village.
The violence has affected innocent civilians, created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty among the public, it said.
"As brothers and sisters of the Naga community, we are pained to see violence overshadow our aspirations and dreams for a peaceful and prosperous future... Stop the violence, respect the sentiment of the people, and give peace a chance. Let us resolve our differences through dialogue, not guns," it said.
