IMPHAL, Mar 25 : The Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Kakching, today remanded 39-year-old Salam Oken, a personnel of the 7th IRB, to further police custody in connection with the murder of Chingakham Malemnganba on the night of March 13 at Keirak Makha Leikai under Kakching Police Station.
Oken, s/o Thabal of Tejpur Awang Leikai who is currently attached to the Kakching Commando Unit, was produced before the Court today after the completion of his police custody period.
The police requested an additional 5 days of custody for further investigation.
What the APP submitted
Oken was arrested by Kakching police on March 16, at around 12.30 am, in connection with the murder case.
The incident occurred on March 13, when an unknown armed assailant shot Chingakham Malemnganba (51) of Tejpur Awang Leikai from close range along the inter-village road near Tejpur, Keirak Makha Leikai, resulting in his immediate death.
A suo-motu case was registered for investigation.
During police custody, Oken reportedly disclosed the location where the firearm used in the crime was hidden.
He led authorities to a spot near the water supply reservoir pond of the RDO and MPA clubs, located at Thounaojam Khunjin towards Kakyai Thong.
With the assistance of the Mobile Forensic Unit of Thoubal, the firearm was recovered from the pond.
Further investigation revealed that another co-accused, Kangabam Amujao (26) of Kumbi Bazzar Khaidem Leikai, was arrested on March 22.
During preliminary interrogation, Amujao admitted to his involvement in the crime alongside Oken.
Amujao was subsequently remanded to 8 days police custody until March 30.
However, discrepancies have emerged in the statements of the accused.
Oken claimed that the shooting was carried out by Amujao using the double-barrel firearm, while Amujao stated that Oken was the one who fired the shot.
Amujao also named another co-accused, Bijoy alias Roshan, as being involved in the crime.
This suggests that the three men acted together in committing the murder.
The APP further noted that Oken has been reluctant to disclose the full details regarding the third co-accused, Bijoy alias Roshan, from Kumbi, including his whereabouts and role in the crime.
The investigation has also revealed the need for further custodial interrogation of Oken to recover the cartridge used in the crime, identify and apprehend other co-accused, and recover additional incriminating materials, such as the clothes worn during the incident.
The authorities also aim to piece together the complete sequence of events and the conspiracy behind the murder.
After reviewing the case records and hearing the submissions of the APP, the Court remanded Oken to three more days of police custody, till March 27, for further investigation.
