IMPHAL, Mar 25: The proposed census scheduled to be launched from next month must be postponed until Manipur returns to normalcy, MPCC spokesperson and general secretary, Seram Neken has said.
In a video message on social media, Neken said the current situation in Manipur is not conducive for any census related exercises.
Neken said the Government of India is aware that Manipur is currently reeling under serious conflict related crises including the issue of illegal immigration, and thousands of people are displaced and staying in relief camps.
Conducting the census amid such a situation would be an attempt to give Indian citizenship to illegal immigrants, he said.
The Central Government must hear and understand the aspirations of the people of the State, he said.
If the BJP-led Government goes ahead with the census exercise against the will of the people, then it will be considered a Government that seeks to erase Manipur as a State and give it to illegal immigrants, Neken asserted.
He urged all political parties to shed their differences and collectively push for postponement of the census until normalcy returns to Manipur.
