Ukhrul, Mar 25 : With the objective of resolving the ongoing conflict between the Tangkhul and Kuki community in Litan area, MLA Ram Muivah and MLA Leishiyo Keishing held a discussion with Tangkhul leaders at Tangkhul Naga Long Office, Wino Bazar today.
Speaking to the media, Ram Muivah expressed deep concern for the people affected by the violence that took place between Shangkai and Sharkaphung village as well as rising tensions along the Imphal-Ukhrul Highway in Litan area.
The goal of the two Tangkhul legislators' Ukhrul visit is to resolve the conflict, ensure free and safe movement for the commuters along the highway and listen to the grievances of the public, he said.
Today's meeting focused on ways to find a solution, bring peace in the region and avert further armed confrontation.
The discussion was cordial, with the Tangkhul leaders putting forward valuable ideas on how to resolve the issue and restore peace, said Ram Muivah.
He added that the ideas suggested by the Tangkhul leaders will be conveyed to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand.
The two Tangkhul legislators also met Kuki CSOs and village leaders at Shangkai village to get their input for an amicable solution.
They are also reportedly set to appeal the Chief Minister to provide protection to the commuters along the vulnerable Imphal-Ukhrul Road (NH-202).
It is worth noting that the current tensions between the two communities originated from a February 7 incident when a Tang-khul man was beaten up by some Kukis at Litan. A violent confrontation between the Kukis and Tangkhuls ensued leading to torching of many houses in Litan Sareikhong. Currently, the situation in the area remains highly volatile with intermittent firing endangering the life of innocent civilians.
