MP urges Bharat Ratna for Ratan Thiyam

IMPHAL, Mar 27 : Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has urged the Centre to confer the Bharat Ratna on Late Ratan Thiyam posthumously as a fitting tribute to one of the greatest cultural ambassadors of India.
He raised the demand during the Zero Hour of the ongoing Parliamentary session today.
Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of India.
The RS MP described Ratan Thiyam as one of India's greatest theatre legends and a towering cultural icon from Manipur.
"Ratan Thiyam was a multifaceted genius, a playwright, director, painter, writer and theatre visionary who transformed Indian theatre through his unique blending of traditional Manipur aesthetics with modern theatrical expression", remarked the RS MP.
During his speech, Leishemba Sanajaoba highlighted the theatre doyen's landmark productions over a career spanning more than five decades- such as Chakravyuha, Andha Yug, Ritusamhara and Uttar Priyadarshi etc which brought immense glory to India on the global stage.
He was the first National School of Drama (NSD) graduate from Manipur, later serving as its Director from 1987 to 1989 and as Chairman from 2013 to 2017.
In 1976, he founded the Chorus Repertory Theatre in Imphal, which became a Nationally acclaimed centre of experimental and socially conscious theatre.
His contributions were recognised with Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, among many other honours. In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to theatre, he was conferred the Legend of India Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 by the-then Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu. Ratan Thiyam elevated Manipur theatre to National and international prominence and became a symbol of India's cultural diversity and artistic excellence, pointed out the RS MP.
Thus, he urged the Indian Government to award the Bharat Ratna posthumously to Ratan Thiyam to honour a "legendary son of Manipur".
