MU glows with 15th convocation ceremony

IMPHAL, Mar 27 :  The 15th convocation ceremony of Manipur University was held today at the auditorium of the University at Canchipur, with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh attending as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
The main attraction of the event was the wearing of koiyet by male students and dignitaries instead of trencher caps and donning of phaneks by female students.
On the occasion, degrees across various disciplines were conferred upon graduates from the academic years 2013 to 2020.
Altogether, 1061 graduates registered for the convocation.
Of these, 304 meritorious students were awarded gold medals. Cash awards were also presented to exceptional graduates.
Additionally, 104 scholars were conferred PhD degrees.
Held after a long gap, the convocation witnessed a large gathering of graduates, students, academicians, and scholars, marking a significant milestone in the University’s academic journey, said a statement from Lok Bhavan.
As part of the convocation ceremony, the Governor conferred medals on meritorious students from various disciplines who secured top positions in their respective courses, in recognition of their academic excellence.
Addressing the function, the Governor said that it was a moment of great pride and fulfilment for the graduating students, marking not only the culmination of their academic journey but the beginning of a new phase filled with opportunities and responsibilities.
He emphasised that institutions like Manipur University play a crucial role in shaping young minds and contributing to Nation-building.
He underscored that education must go beyond degrees to foster integrity, ethical values, and a sense of duty.
Emphasising the significance of the North East in India’s development, he underscored the responsibility of the youth in fostering peace, progress, and social harmony.
The Governor also encouraged them to uphold unity, inclusivity, and Constitutional values.
Addressing the gathering the Chief Minister stressed that the Government of Manipur is fully committed to support higher education and skill development in the State.
The Government will also continue to work hand in hand with institutions like Manipur University to ensure the youths have access to the best possible opportunities, he added.
Khemchand further said that for years, Manipur University has been the epicentre of intellectual pursuit.
The Chief Minister said that he was delighted to know that 572 students of Manipur University have been placed in various Government and private sector positions in the last two years.
During the convocation, more than 1,000 graduates were awarded degrees. Out of which, 332 students received gold medal in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.
The convocation was also virtually attended by the students and faculties of Bethany College, Churachandpur; Presidency College, Motbung, Kangpokpi and Moreh College, Moreh.
The convocation ceremony was attended by MU Chancellor Prof T Tirupati Rao; Vice-Chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh, Secretary General of Association of Indian Universities Dr Pankaj Mittal and Deans of various departments, faculties, and students among others.
