IMPHAL, Mar 27 : The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) has announced that it will observe the 46th Realisation Day (Meekap Thokpa Numit) on April 17, urging the public to refrain from holding any festivities on that day.
Speaking to the media, AMSU secretary general S Lanba Mangang stated that the student union will also organise a motorcycle rally on April 8, demanding the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Lanba explained that AMSU has been observing Realisation Day to commemorate the 1980 "Go Back Foreigners" movement, during which two students, Potsangbam Premananda and Huidrom Loken, were killed.
He mentioned that the event will begin with the hoisting of the flag by AMSU president Bruce Pebam at Pishum Chingamacha, followed by a short rally from Pishum Chingamacha to Manipur College.
After the rally, a public meeting will be held, he said and appealed to the public to attend the Meekap Thokpa Numit observance.
Meanwhile, Lanba emphasised that conducting census operations without updating the NRC would be unacceptable.
He added that the April 8 bike rally, demanding the NRC update, will begin at Kangla and cover Moirang, Kumbi, Kakching Khunou, Kakching, Thoubal, and Khangabok, with a public meeting at Khangabok Unity Park.
Carrying out census operations in Manipur without addressing the issues of illegal immigrants and internally displaced people would be illogical, he said, cautioning that AMSU will not remain silent if the Government proceeds with the census without updating the NRC.
