BISHNUPUR, Mar 27 : Peace cyclist Malem Thongam has set her mind on waiting for Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand to flag off the Churachandpur leg of her cycling expedition launched under the theme of “Cycling for Peace in Manipur”.
The social activist came to this decision after being stopped by security forces at Tronglaobi, following the launch of her Chura-chandpur tour from Moirang Khunou as part of the 16-district cycling expedition launched on March 12.
According to Malem, she had pre-emptively sought the support of Chura-chandpur CSOs on March 15 for her expedition.
In a press release, the ITLF had strongly opposed her entry into Chura-chandpur, following which the peace cyclist urged the Govt to take action within 12 hours.
As the State Government had announced protection for Kuki people entering the valley, she also sought similar safeguards for valley people going to the hills and urged the authorities to seize sophisticated weapons from the Kuki community within 15 days. She had also urged the Chief Minister to flag off her cycling tour into Churachandpur.
However, due to the lack of response from the Government even after 10 days and loss of faith in the State machinery, the Churachandpur leg of the cycling tour was launched from Moirang Khunou today with the support of numerous meira paibis, said Malem Thongam.
"Though the peace expedition has been obstructed by Manipur Police at Tronglaobi, it is my ultimate resolve to cycle through Churachandpur as part of the tour. So I will wait until the Chief Minister's arrival", she added.
Condemning the State Government for obstructing her tour, she said the Churachandpur leg is not meant to intensify the unrest. She also expressed doubt that she will be allowed to proceed with the rest of her expedition through the valley districts.
If the Government wants peace and the Chief Minister truly sees everyone in Manipur as equals, he should personally flag off the tour and allow her to proceed to Churachandpur, urged Malem Thongam.
She also mentioned that she has no means to get an audience with the Chief Minister and thus vowed to wait for him and spend the night here until his arrival. The social activist was accompanied by members of MAMPIL (Moirang Lamkhai), Imagi Meira, womenfolk from Thamnapokpi and meira paibis from different parts of the State when the group was stopped by Manipur Police. They successfully went further till Tronglaobi Makha Leikai with the help of locals but could not proceed beyond this point.
