IMPHAL, Mar 28
The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has taken se-rious note of the Memo- randum of Settlement (MoS) signed on March 15, 2026 by the Government of Assam with Hmar and Kuki insur-gent groups for a permanent settlement.
The front, in a statement issued by its ministry of information and publicity, claimed that the agreement reflects an understanding of the sentiments, struggles and sacrifices of the Hmar and Kuki communities in the region.
Any step toward peace, stability and development is a welcome move for all communities, the ZUF said.
However, the Front asserted that such agreements must be just, inclusive and respectful of all indigenous stakeholders.
The ZUF unequivocally stated that peace cannot be achieved at the cost of other people's rights, history, or land.
The Government must not, under any circumstances, initiate or permit any arrangement that leads to the alteration, bifurcation or trifurcation of Zeliang-rong ancestral territories, nor entertain any framework that undermines the political rights, identity, and historical integrity of the Zeliang- rong people, the ZUF said.
Placing on record its firm position that Zeliangrong ancestral land is inviolable and non-negotiable, the front stated that any attempt, direct or indirect to encroach upon, redraw, or dilute these boundaries will be met with resolute and collective resistance through all consti- tutional, democratic, and legitimate means.
The ZUF called upon both the State and Central Governments to maintain full transparency in the contents and implementation of the agreements and to ensure that no clause, explicit or implicit, adversely affect the rights and interests of the Zeliangrong people.
The front reiterated that genuine and sustainable peace can only be built on fairness, mutual respect, and the protection of every community's rightful heritage.
Any deviation from these principles risks undermining trust and stability in the region, it cautioned.
