IMPHAL, Mar 29 : The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Kangleipak, a joint body of different organisations, has urged the Government to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the context of Manipur before proceeding with the census operations.
CSOs, Kangleipak, is a conglomerate of IPSA, PANDM, ACOAM-Lup, IPAK, KSA, Loya Lup, Kangla Mei, KIL, CLK, ERDO, AKSIL, ANDOK, MIKL, and SWA.
In a statement, the CSOs argued that including illegal immigrants in the population count would be detrimental to the indigenous communities.
The State has been grappling with various issues, and legalizing illegal immigrants would exacerbate the situation, it said.
Saying that some Assembly seats in the valley districts could be lost during delimitation if illegal immigrants are not identified before the census, the CSOs urged the Government to defer the census until the issue of illegal immigration is addressed.
Meanwhile, the CSOs said that a public meeting was organised today at Lamding Ikop Ningthou Laibung and Uripok Tourangbam Leikai as part of their campaign to raise awareness on the need to update the NRC before proceeding with census operations. After a discussion on the topic "No NRC Update, No Census," the attendees of the meetings unanimously agreed that the Government must identify illegal immigrants to protect the indigenous communities.
