IMPHAL, Mar 2 : The 15th edition of the Journalist’s Sports Meet 2026 was formally launched today at Manipur Press Club following a torch relay from Kangla this morning.
The 5-day sports meet is being hosted by the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) as a part of its annual programme.
The meet was opened in the presence of Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director RIMS; Khogendra Khomdram, Editor of The Sangai Express and president of Editors’ Guild Manipur; Asem Bhakta, president AMWJU; Irengbam Arun, senior journalist and Manju Sharma, wife of G Sunil Kumar Sharma as dignitaries.
Declaring the sports meet open, Prof G Sunil Kumar stated that the event will surely help the journalists maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Noting that it is a matter of pride that a small State like Manipur has so far produced 19 olympians and boasts leading per capita athletic figures, he exuded confidence that many young athletes will emerge from the State and carry forward the rich sporting legacy.
Stressing on the need of 30-minute daily physical activity to maintain a good physical and mental health, the Director said that RIMS is conducting a free health camp for journalists very soon.
He also took note of the high level of stress and other health issues faced by working journalists owing to precarious working conditions and urged the journalists to get their health checked up regularly, indulge in nutritious food and regular physical activities.
He also lauded AMJWU for annually hosting the sports meet and enabling journalists compete in various sporting events during the Yaoshang festival.
He also highlighted the crucial role played by media firms in raising health awareness.
Speaking at the event, Khogendra Khomdram said that the sports meet for the journalists was started in 2011. It is an indisputable fact that sports runs in the veins of every Manipuri, he said while adding that the meet will provide a valuable platform for journalists working in different media firms to gather and showcase their athletic talents.
AMWJU president Asem Bhakta also called upon all the journalists to actively participate in the sports meet and prayed for a successful and meaningful conclusion.
