SENAPATI, Mar 2: A TMT-bar loaded truck headed for Imphal from Dimapur was set ablaze by unknown miscreants on NH-2 at a place near Kabinam near Maram at around 8.30 am Monday.
Reportedly, the truck was forcibly stopped by two unknown masked men. They whisked away the three occupants towards Maram, and the truck was set ablaze.
The truck was carrying construction materials including iron rods and plastic barrels.
The incident has courted condemnation from many bodies.
The All Naga Traders Association, Manipur said it was a direct attack on the trading community and the rule of law.
The body urged law enforcement agencies to promptly conduct a thorough investigation and apprehend the accused and bring them to trial.
The body also appealed to all citizens to share any information that may assist in identifying the perpetrators.
The Maram Students' Union or the Maralui Karalimei Swijoikang (MKS) strongly condemned the deliberate act of arson.
It said it was a cowardly and criminal act which threatens peace and public safety.
It was not merely an act of arson, but a direct challenge to the collective security, dignity, and harmony of the people of Maram. Such attempts to instill fear and create instability are unacceptable and will not be tolerated, the student body said. NH-2 serves as the lifeline of "our people." Any disruption or obstruction on the operation of the highway affects the socio-economic well-being and daily lives of the public. Any acts of violence along this vital route undermine stability and public safety, said the MKS, demanding swift action from the authorities concerned to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
It also advised the perpetrators involved in this heinous act to surrender before the competent authorities within 48 hours.
The union will be compelled to initiate democratic forms of agitation if no swift action is taken, it said.
