IMPHAL, Mar 30: Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Ekou, who have been taking refuge in the relief camps of Sajiwa and Sawombung have returned Rs 24 lakh given by the Government for construction of houses to the Sawombung Junior BDO. There is a Government scheme of providing Rs 3 lakh to each IDP family for construction of houses.
This amount includes Rs 1.30 lakh from PMAY-GFY and Rs 1.70 lakh from the Home Department.
The Government sent the first instalment of Rs 48,000 each to the bank accounts of the IDPs from the particular scheme. But the IDPs have been protesting that the sum of Rs 3 lakh is too little for construction of a house and they collectively marched to the BDO, Sawombung office today and returned Rs 24 lakh.
One Longjam Basanta said that the IDPs from Ekou earlier submitted a representation to the concerned Imphal East district authority not to send the financial aid.
He said that the sum of Rs 3 lakh is too little for construction of a house and the Government has been trying to hoodwink the masses with this ‘trivial’ sum.
According to the IDPs, they started receiving the first instalment of Rs 48,000  from the latter part of January.
As the protesting IDPs were told that the BDO was not at office but holding a meeting with the Imphal East DC, they returned the amount of Rs 24 lakh to the Junior BDO.
