IMPHAL, Mar 8 : All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) observed the International Women's Day at GM hall, Imphal today.
The day was observed under the theme "Let us carry the struggle forward."
Dean of School of Humanities, MU, Professor Dr T Tampha; AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani; and Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba, Manipur president Soraisam Memcha attended the event.
Speaking at the event, AMAWOVA president Y Kunjarani said the day is celebrated worldwide advocating women's right, gender equality, and honouring their achievements in different fields. The observance in Manipur, on the other hand, is unique as it acknowledges roles women play in safeguarding the future of the Manipuri society. She said mass movements are a must to bring about a developed, equal and just society which is free of violence and oppression.
Only the collective work and effort of the people can bring positive changes in a society, she added.
Kunjarani asserted Manipur has suffered a great deal of atrocities after its merger with India in 1949.
There have been numerous cases of alleged atrocities committed by Central security forces against citizens of Manipur including women, she added.
At present, Manipur is reeling under a man-made crisis that threatens to disintegrate it. All forces working behind to disintegrate the State must be identified and faced collectively, she said.
Kunjarani said AMAWOVA is standing firm for the rights of women. The association is always against gender based discrimination and exploitation. It is firm about ensuring women's safety, and empowering them to become financially independent, she added.
