IMPHAL, Mar 8 : Categorically saying that the International Women’s Day is not an occasion for celebration in Manipur but a part of a larger struggle, the CorCom has saluted all the women of Manipur who have been struggling against atrocities by Indian armed forces, struggling for justice through Courts as well as the displaced women’s struggle for their rights.
A statement issued by CorCom on the occasion of the International Women’s Day decried that several incidents of suppression of women are visible in Manipur today.
At the same time, some powerful and influential people have been working consistently to destroy the spirit and unity of women, and their resolve to fight all critical National issues boldly and collectively, it said.
Even though the International Women’s Day took birth in 1991 in Europe, Manipuri women fought the First Nupi Lan in 1904 against British colonial rulers, followed by the Second Nupi Lan in 1939 against the king who was then under complete control of the British colonists.
The Meira Paibi movement which started in 1980 has been fighting unwaveringly against the Government of India’s policy of oppression and suppression, the CorCom said.
It said that both the two Nupi Lans and the current Meira Paibi movement are against colonial rule.
Unlike other women’s movements seen in other parts of the world, the Manipuri people’s movements are primarily focused on National issues, ahead of women exclusive issues, it remarked.
Modesty of a large number of women have been violated and many women murdered. At the same time, the number of ‘half widows’ whose husbands have disappeared has been rising in Manipur. The proxy war which has been raging since May 3, 2023 has added to the number of half widows, it said.
Even though Manipuri women brought glory for India in different sports disciplines on international platforms, the Indian armed forces have been subjecting Manipuri women to all kinds of atrocities including electric shocks, it alleged.
Because of the ‘artificial conflict’ and the resulting prolonged violence, the State’s market economy has collapsed and the State’s economy has suffered a serious setback.
While 10,000 hectares of paddy fields have been rendered uncultivable, the Government of India has been watching as a mute spectator when highways are being blocked openly. This has further worsened the financial woes of women, the CorCom said.
The CorCom pledged that it will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of Manipuri women.
Manipuri women who are being crushed by the alleged colonial rule know well that the only way to free themselves is collective struggle, it said. International Women’s Day should not be reduced to a mere commemorative function but it should be a meaningful event which marks a political revolution, the CorCom asserted. It said that National liberation movements of all colonized Nations must go hand in hand with the struggles for women’s freedom. It also asserted that the women’s struggle for freedom is a part of the National liberation movement.
