IMPHAL, Mar 8: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) has categorically asked all MLAs, Ministers and politicians to stop sheltering and patronising illegal immigrants with the vested interest of winning elections.
Speaking at a public consultation programme on the scheduled census operations at Phumlou, Imphal West today, CJFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said that they have repeatedly asked the Government to defer census operations in Manipur.
The State Assembly may or may not take a resolution to defer census operations in Manipur, the CJFD is all prepared to launch a mass movement to keep the scheduled census operations at bay, the convenor said.
Jeetendra Ningomba said that the census exercise scheduled from April this year will be unfair and give undue advantage to illegal immigrants if it goes ahead as planned by the Government.
He said that waves after waves of illegal immigrants came and settled in Manipur.
Manipur is currently facing a serious crisis following a sustained armed aggression launched by illegal immigrants against indigenous people and these illegal immigrants are even demanding a separate administration, he said.
During the recent violent crisis, a large number of Kuki and other illegal immigrants from Myanmar and other neighbouring countries intruded into Manipur and are living in the State, he said.
If census operations are carried out without first identifying and deporting these illegal immigrants, the foreign Nationals will become Indian citizens, and this will pose a serious challenge to the indigenous people politically, economically and culturally, he warned.
Naturalisation of the illegal immigrants will turn out to be a big impetus to their demand for separate administration/State, he said.
“CJFD and the people of Manipur have no objection to the census exercise per se. We are only demanding deferment of the exercise for some time until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is updated with respect to Manipur and all the illegal immigrants are identified”, Jeetendra Ningomba said.
There have been instances of deferment of census operations in the States of Nagaland, Jammu & Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam etc.
The prevailing situation of Manipur is not conducive for carrying out census operations. If census operations are carried out under the prevailing situation, the census report will be full of false and inaccurate data, he said. The matter has been raised with the Governor, the Chief Minister and the political parties. But there has been no response till date.
The indifferent attitude of the authorities and the political leaders have left the CJFD with no option but launching a strong and sustained mass movement, Jeetendra Ningomba asserted.
He went on to ask whether the authorities should continue working to integrate those people who have been waging a sustained aggression to break up Manipur.
He also pointed out that under the prevailing situation, Meiteis cannot go to Churachandpur and Kangpokpi and nor can they travel along National Highways.
If the illegal immigrants are assigned the task of carrying out the census operations, the outcome will be disastrous, the CJFD convenor warned.
In such a scenario, a sheer population imbalance is a foregone conclusion. At that time, illegal immigrants will easily wrest political power and the Kukis will have no difficulty in realising their demand of a separate administration.
If MLAs, Ministers and politicians continue to shelter and patronise illegal immigrants just for the sake of winning elections by overlooking the threats posed by the ever swelling population of illegal immigrants, the consequences will be dire and irreversible, he added.
