IMPHAL, Mar 8 : Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has announced that a budgetary provision of Rs 350 crore has been allocated in the Budget 2026-27 to assist 3.5 lakh women affected by the unrest in Manipur.
He made the announcement at an International Women’s Day event held today at the City Convention Centre, under the theme "Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls."
An audio-visual presentation on Mission Shakti was showcased during the event, which was organised by the Social Welfare Department.
Olympian weightlifter (Padmashree) Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi and folk singer Mangka Mayanglam-bam were also felicitated during the programme.
Speaking as the chief guest, Khemchand highlighted the significant role Manipuri women have played in the State’s development, from politics to the economy, throughout history.
The Chief Minister also prayed for the day to pave the way for free movement across the State.
Acknowledging the economic hardships faced by families in Manipur due to the ongoing situation, he reiterated that the Government has made provisions to allocate Rs 350 crore in the Budget to help alleviate these difficulties.
He further stated that the funds would be distributed to 3.5 lakh women across the State.
The Chief Minister stated that many widows have raised their children to become successful individuals by selling vegetables and working in handlooms.
"We are their sons and daughters," he said.
He also emphasised that Manipuri women have always been at the forefront during times of crisis in the State.
Manipuri women have consistently stood at the forefront, guiding society through challenges and addressing critical issues, he said and added that their leadership and resilience are crucial in fostering peace, harmony, and progress in the State.
Naoriya Pakhanglakpa AC MLA S Kebi, was the guest of honour at the event.
She spoke about the various challenges women face, despite the claim of equal rights for both men and women.
Pointing out that women are often not secure while travelling, she urged all women to exercise caution wherever they go.
Kebi also mentioned that the Government has implemented several schemes for the welfare of women and encouraged all women to take advantage of these initiatives.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken, Chief Secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel, and other dignitaries attended the event.
