IMPHAL, Apr 9 : Hosts Manipur University (MU) lifted the men’s team champions trophy in the All India Inter University Thang-Ta Competition 2025-26 as Manipur University of Culture (MUC) claimed the women’s team champions title.
The 4-day competition was hosted by Manipur University, Canchipur at its Dr Kamal Indoor Stadium under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi.
MU sealed the men’s top honour with a haul of 9 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals as MUC finished runners up with a haul of 5 gold, 7 silver and 8 bronze medals.
The Manipur University men’s team was managed by Dr Okram Parlin of Waikhom Mani Girls’ College and coached by Yumnam Khagemba.
MUC, meanwhile won the women’s team title by amassing 8 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals as National Sports University settled for the runners up title with 3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
The final day of the competition saw MU registering four gold medals, 3 in the men and 1 in the women’s section and 2 silver medals in the women’s section while MUC secured overall 2 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
N Bikash picked up a gold medal in the men’s Phunaba Anishuba competition for the -80 kg category by beating NSU’s Sandip Dutta. Lenin Irengbam of MUC and Gautam Sharma of Agriculture University, Kota shared the bronze medal podium in this category.
NSU’s Abin Joseph, meanwhile, laid his hands on the +80 kg category gold by beating Adnan Hamid Magray of Sher-E Kashmir University of Agri Sc and Tech in the final. Apex University’s Chityranjan Verma and R Dinesh of TNPESU bagged bronze medals in this category.
The day also witnessed Thoiba Yumnam of MUC securing men’s Thang-Haiba gold medal as Arun Singh of Dr KN Modi University settled for the silver medal.
MU’s Yumnam Deepak meanwhile fetched the Thanglon event gold as N Rameshchandra of MUC and Saurab Dhubi of ICFAI University finished second and third to settle for the silver and the bronze medals.
Yumnam Umakanta further extended MU’s gold medal haul by topping Khong-Khutlon competition as Ningthoujam Mahesh of MUC and Kavin of TNPESU made 2-3 podium finishes.
MUC’s Kakchingtabam Meenakshi meanwhile clinched the Thang-Haiba event gold medal for women as Monika Meitram of MU and Payal of Apex University finished second and third.
Longjam Sophiya Chanu of Dhanamanjuri University on the other hand earned the Thanglon event gold medal as MU’s Ningthoukhongjam Daisy and Moirangthem Inunganbi of MUC bagged the silver and the bronze medal respectively.
MU’s Rasuni Huidrom in the meantime clinched the Khonglon-Khutlon event gold as Langlenthoibi Chanu of MUC and Nitika Dhayal of Apex University sealed the silver and the bronze medals respectively.
The competition saw a healthy participation of around 250 athletes representing 28 universities from across the country.
The valedictory function cum closing ceremony of the competition was attended by Prof Sumitra Phanjoubam, Dean of School of Mathematics and Physical, MU; Professor Ch Ibohal, Dean of Students Welfare, MU; Dr Surjeet, Director Physical Education University of Kashmir and Observer of Association of Indian Universities; and H Premkumar, president, Thang-Ta Federation of India as dignitaries who also feted the top teams with trophies.
