Police give factual account

IMPHAL, Apr 9 : The police have issued a clarification regarding the shutdown called by CoTU on National Highway 2.
In a bulletin, the police stated that the man who sustained bullet injuries at Shantipur in Kangpokpi was shot after failing to stop his vehicle despite repeated signals to do so by security forces.
Narrating the sequence of the incident, police stated that a Chevrolet Cruze with three occupants and a Maruti Alto which came from Kangpokpi and Sekmai respectively arrived at Kanglatongbi Bridge to exchange their vehicles last night around 9.30.
During the process, the Cruze met with a minor accident, it said and added that police personnel deployed at Kanglatongbi near Shantipur rushed to the spot immediately and attended to them.
Saying that the Alto car, meanwhile, approached at high speed, ignored repeated signals to stop and nearly hit the security personnel, it added that the occupants attempted to flee towards Kangpokpi.
The security personnel fired controlled rounds aimed at the tyres to stop the vehicle in view of the imminent risk and the suspicious behaviour, the police said, adding that the vehicle, however, didn't halt and continued fleeing.
Subsequently, it was learnt that the driver of the Alto car, Lenkhogin Tuboi, sustained bullet injuries and was taken to Mission Hospital in Kangpokpi for treatment, police added.
The driver of the Cruze, Janggingen Khongsai (21), was detained and handed over to G Sapermeina police, it said and added that Janggingen was later released..
An FIR has been registered, police said, appealing to the people not to be misled by unverified information.
