IMPHAL, Apr 10 : The Opposition Congress party has asserted that the State Government has been acting at the behest and command of the Centre without exercising the powers guaranteed by the Constitution.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today, MPCC Political Affairs Committee member Dr Khwairakpam Loken vehemently condemned the barbaric attack at Tronglaobi which killed two sleeping kids and inflicted critical injuries to their mother as well as the indiscriminate firing by CRPF upon protesters which claimed three civilians.
So far, BJP’s double-engine Governments at the Centre and the State have not taken up any concrete step to resolve the violent crisis which broke out on May 3, 2023. Loken said.
He said that people have lost faith in the ad-hoc measures resorted to by the Government from time to time.
Taking serious note of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s deafening silence on the chilling, barbaric murder of two innocent kids at Tronglaobi, he asked if Narendra Modi is devoid of any sense of humanity.
He also questioned whether the State’s civil administration is functioning under the Central paramilitary forces sent by Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to control the violence in Manipur.
Asking whether the life of a Manipuri citizen can be exchanged with Rs 10 lakh, Loken pointed out that protecting the life and property of citizens is the responsibility of the State Government and the Centre.
Dr Khumukcham Ratankumar, another member of MPCC Political Affairs Committee, said that the State Government has failed miserably to exercise the powers guaranteed to it by the Constitution.
He said that the State Government is unable to even take a decision independently.
It is a matter of grave concern that the State Government is always waiting for the Centre’s command and approval in doing anything, he remarked.
Even though there is rule of law in the valley, there is neither law nor order in the hill areas. Kuki militants under SoO agreement have been moving around openly with arms and doing whatever they feel like, Dr Ratankumar said.
He questioned the Government’s failure to launch a military crackdown and control the Kuki militants under SoO agreement.
He urged the State Government to act by taking into consideration the people’s sentiment, and station State forces in peripheral areas.
