IMPHAL, Apr 11: The Liangmai Naga community, the wider Naga community and Meitei residents living in the Kanglatongbi area have prohibited all armed Kuki elements from operating, loitering or engaging in any form of armed activity in the civilian inhabited areas of Kanglatongbi.
A joint press release issued by the Mantriband Development Committee and the Namdilong Village Authority has explicitly warned armed Kuki elements against loitering or engaging in armed activity within civilian zones.
It cited a specific incident on April 9, 2026, where shots were fired at approximately 11:30 pm, as the catalyst for this ultimatum.
"The shots fired on April 9, 2026 must be the last of their kind," the statement read, noting that stray bullets from recent skirmishes have struck two houses in the area, narrowly missing residents.
The village authorities highlighted that an armed camp is currently situated roughly 50 meters from Naga-inhabited households, a proximity they described as "irresponsible and intolerable."
The press release presented  a record of "Kuki linked activities" to provide context for their current stance:
May 3, 2023: Mob attack affected local residents.
May 27, 2023: Sustained gunfire near the Kanglatongbi Bazar Board.
March 13, 2026: Firing incidents along Makhan Road and the National Highway.
April 9, 2026: Most recent firing targeting 1st MR personnel near Mandir Hindi Higher Secondary School.
Beyond the warning to militants, the joint press release issued a direct call to the State and Central Governments.
The two bodies are demanding;
Clarity on status: A formal definition of indigenous residents versus refugees.
Enhanced monitoring of the security situation to prevent further escalation.
Immediate steps to restore public confidence and safety.
The notice, signed by Jinwangbou Abonmai (chairman, Namdilong Village Authority) and Ng Jeevan Meitei (general secretary, Mantriband Development Committee), also pleaded for restraint, emphasizing that the community's past patience should not be mistaken for weakness.
"Let this be the last ultimatum issued in the interest of peace, dignity, and the protection of innocent lives," the statement concluded.
