IMPHAL, Apr 11 : The Safai Karmachari Sangh, Manipur, has postponed its proposed strike following swift action by the Labour Department on the union’s long-pending demands.
Submitted via a letter on March 24 under the Industrial Dispute Act, 1947, the demands prompted Deputy Labour Commissioner Tanushree Naorem to write to the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) Commissioner on April 6, urging immediate steps and an action-taken report.
In a release, the Safai Karmachari Sangh hailed the intervention as a hopeful sign for industrial harmony and a testament to the Labour Code’s effectiveness.
The letter outlines key demands, including formal appointment orders/ engagement orders for safai karmacharis, social security provisions under the Social Security Code, 2020, and an end to IMC’s unfair labour practices.
Other demands include investigating a suspicious Rs 5,000 pre-Yaoshang payment to select sweepers, enforcing Minimum Wages Act and Social Security Code, filling vacant regular posts as per a September 2023 agreement, and clearing pending salaries and arrears.
The Safai Karmachari Sangh credited the department’s adherence to new Labour Codes and laws for averting the strike, expressing gratitude for the proactive response.
