IMPHAL, Apr 11
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against polluting factories/industries in and around Moidangpok, New Keithelmanbi, and Moidangpok Khunou has claimed that additional stone crushing units, brick kilns, and bitumen hot mixing plants have been established in the area, despite the Government's notice to halt operations of seven stone crushing units.
Speaking to the media at Moidangpok today, Khoirom ongbi Priyalakshmi, secretary of Moidangpok Apunba Meira Paibi, stated that the people of Moidangpok, New Keithelmanbi, and Moidangpok Khunou have been urging the Government to address the operation of these industries and factories in their areas.
She said that the locals are concerned about the impact on paddy lands and the threat to public health from dust and smoke generated from the industries and factories.
She stated that the Government had sealed seven stone crushing units in the area last month and instructed the owners to suspend operations until further notice.
Claiming that the sealed plants continue to operate, she alleged that new stone crushing units, brick kilns, and hot bitumen mixing plants have also been set up in the area.
She said this development prompted them to issue an ultimatum to the Government to shut down the industries, warning that they will blockade National Highway 37 starting from April 3, if the issue is not addressed.
Saying that their decision to close National Highway 37 was put on hold after receiving a positive assurance from the Government, she urged the Government to take the necessary actions promptly. She also urged all concerned to establish industries and factories in areas where they will not harm public health and paddy lands.
