IMPHAL, Apr 11: The North East Media Forum (NEMF) has condemned recent incidents of intimidation and violence against media houses and media persons in Assam, and demanded appropriate action from the State Government.
The NEMF is highly concerned about the broader environment in which these incidents have occurred and notes that the recent public remarks by the Chief Minister of Assam, targeting sections of the media have raised serious concerns about press freedom in the State, said the forum in a statement.
Statements by people holding Constitutional positions, suggesting action against specific journalists and media organizations for raising issues apparently uncomfortable for them, might lead to unnecessary hostility toward the fourth pillar of democracty, NEMF said.
The Delhi-based media body strongly condemned the shocking attack on the Lakhimpur office of Asomiya Pratidin newspaper, and said that the incident, in which unidentified miscreants vandalized the premises and damaged property of the organisation, represented a serious threat to the safety of journalists and an unacceptable assault on the freedom of the press.
