IMPHAL, Apr 12 : Local residents along the Imphal-Ukhrul road blocked the road at multiple locations early this morning, demanding the unconditional release of Mangsatabam Sanjoy, co-convener of the Lamlai Kendra Apunba Club and Meira Paibi who was arrested by police.
From early morning, a large number of people gathered along the Imphal-Ukhrul road at multiple locations, blocking traffic by placing hard objects and burning tyres, demanding the immediate release of Sanjoy.
Protesters in large numbers gathered at Nongada and Leimakhong Mapal, blocking the road and vowing to continue the blockade until Sanjoy is released.
It is reported that Sanjoy was picked up from his residence by police early in the morning today in connection with protests along the Lamlai side in the wake of the Tronglaobi incident.
Sanjoy had announced plans to impose a public curfew and close Government offices in Lamlai during a public meeting held yesterday.
According to sources, Sanjoy was released by the police around 4 pm today, after which the blockade along the Imphal-Ukhrul road was lifted. However, the Lamlai Kendra Apunba Club and Meira Paibi announced that the public curfew and closure of Government offices in Lamlai will continue until their demands related to the Tronglaobi incident are met.
