IMPHAL, Apr 1: An awareness programme on Pancha Parivartan was conducted at Heirok, aimed at promoting social responsibility and community engagement.
The programme was organised by Prem Dhara as part of the centenary year celebrations of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at its Heirok office.
During the event, members of Eco Network Manipur, Palem Panthou Village Level Federation, and Apunbagi Thouna Village Level Federation—including Shin-thangamba Laishram, Ahongshangbam Rosham Kant Singh, and Hijam Dinesh Singh—were felicitated for their notable contributions to environmental protection.
Speaking on the occasion, Shinthangamba Laishram shared his experience of leading the cleaning of the Heirok river, where nearly 13,000 Kg of waste were recycled.
He noted that a significant portion of the waste, particularly non-biodegradable materials from daily household use, is irresponsibly discarded into rivers. He cautioned that such practices are contaminating the water, and stressed urgent need for responsible waste management.
Addressing the gathering, Laishram Jatra Singh, State Executive Member of RSS Manipur Prant, emphasised that meaningful social change begins with individual initiative.
He stated that society should not wait for Government intervention, but instead take proactive steps at the community level. Jatra further highlighted that social progress depends on mutual trust, unity, and emotional bonding among people. Strengthening family values and nurturing every household with good sanskar (values), he said, is essential for building a cohesive society.
Despite increasing levels of education, he observed that a lack of social cohesion continues to hinder progress.
Referring to Bharatiya thought, he described family as the fundamental unit of society, noting that the resilience of Indian culture lies in its strong family system.
He also expressed concern over the gradual erosion of traditional practices due to the growing influence of Western lifestyles, and called for the revival of customs such as shared family meals, awareness of one’s ancestry, and stronger intergenerational connections.
He pointed out that excessive mobile screen time has reduced meaningful family interactions, urging parents to engage children in household responsibilities and spend quality time together.
On environmental issues, he observed that despite adequate rainfall in Manipur, water scarcity is becoming a concern due to poor management. He stressed the need to conserve water, reduce plastic usage, and adopt mindful consumption practices.
Highlighting the importance of civic responsibility, he stated that rights must be balanced with duties.
He urged citizens to follow traffic rules, maintain discipline, serve their families, and respect the law. He concluded that a society rooted in responsibility and awareness can move towards sustainable and positive development.
