IMPHAL, Apr 1 : Days after several student bodies warned of "stern" agitation against appointment of a new CEO, an unruly mob of youths stormed and vandalised the office of the Chief Executive Officer of the Autonomous District Council Churachandpur yesterday.
The incident took place yesterday at around 3.30 pm.
The mob destroyed and burnt properties of the ADC office and broke the windshields of several vehicles parked inside the office complex.
A large number of people, mostly youths, had gathered inside the office complex before they demanded the ADC staff to vacate the building.
The youths later brought out tables and other items from inside the office and burned them inside the office complex.
Soon after the incident, a team of Churachandpur police rushed to the spot to control the mob.
The incident occurred days after the Hmar Students' Association, Kuki Students' Organisation and Zomi Students' Federation, all based in Churachandpur, demanded the Chief Minister to revoke the appointment of the new CEO of the ADC and retain the previous officer.
In a letter to the Chief Minister on March 29, the student bodies had warned that "the student bodies of the district have jointly resolved to oppose the said appointment and to fight for retention of the previous CEO".
The student bodies had also warned that they would launch stern agitations. They had asserted that the new CEO "doesn't understand the local dynamics" and has "no relationship with civil society organisations". Meanwhile, the police have registered a case against unidentified persons for investigation.
