IMPHAL, Apr 1 : The ceiling is on the verge of collapse, while the seats are worn and broken, reflecting years of neglect. This is the current state of the Centenary Hall of Manipur University (MU), a Central University.
Despite being a Central University, the deteriorating infrastructure at MU has left students frustrated, with many saying they fear even approaching the Centenary Hall, as the ceiling could collapse at any moment.
The Centenary Hall, located adjacent to the Manipuri Department, was inaugurated by former Chief Minister RK Ranbir on November 19, 1990.
With a seating capacity of nearly 700, the hall serves as the venue for Manipur University's major events and programmes.
Notably, MU has 45 departments, with over 6,000 students, including those from other States, currently enrolled.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, some students of the university compared the current condition of the Centenary Hall to that of a pig sty.
While the size of MU is comparable to other Central Universities, there is a stark contrast in terms of cleanliness and infrastructure, they said.
These students said the condition of the Centenary Hall worsened due to prolonged neglect.
Saying that the current state of the hall is miserable, they urged the authorities to repair it as soon as possible.
They said the ceiling of the hall is on the verge of collapsing, while many of the seats are either broken or worn out.
Further stating that the wall leading to the hall is also damaged due to water leakage from the roof, they urged the relevant authorities to repair the hall at the earliest.
