Imphal, Apr 1 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah discussed the State’s law and order situation with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at Parliament House complex, in New Delhi today at about 11.30 am.
The Chief Minister had left Imphal for New Delhi on March 31 following a call from the Union Home Minister for a meeting.
During the meeting, the Union Home Minister reviewed the prevailing security scenario in Manipur, said a statement issued by the CM's Secretariat.
He directed the Chief Minister to expedite the peace process and facilitate inter-community harmony.
Amit Shah has also, in principle, agreed to the creation of a Mahila India Reserve Battalion (IRB) for Manipur and has asked the Chief Minister to submit a formal proposal.
In response, Khemchand, who is expected to return tomorrow, assured that a detailed proposal will be submitted to the Centre at the earliest.
Meanwhile, sources indicated that persistent law and order challenges remain a major concern for the State Government, reports Assam Tribune.
Issues such as pending Cabinet expansion and the slow pace of normalcy have also added to the pressure on the administration.
Demands from different civil society groups for the restoration of free movement along key highways continue to remain unresolved, highlighting the incomplete return to normalcy.
Further, the situation in Ukhrul district has emerged as an additional challenge, raising concerns about stability in the hill areas.
The review meeting assumes significance as Manipur continues to balance security enforcement with reconciliation efforts.
The Centre is understood to be pushing a dual approach, strengthening ground-level security while accelerating the peace process.
Observers noted that unless tangible progress is made in ensuring free movement and addressing district-level instability, claims of improving normalcy may remain largely limited.
