IMPHAL, Apr 2: Rajya Sabha Member Leishemba Sanajaoba has hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for  cushioning the people of the country from the impacts of fuel price hike across the country.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha during zero hour today, Sanajaoba said that almost all countries across the world have been facing sharp rises in fuel prices.
Taking serious note of the sharp rise in the prices of crude oil, the Modi Government has cut excise duty on petrol from Rs 13 to Rs 3 per litre.
The excise duty on diesel has been cut down to nil from Rs 10 per litre, he said.
With the situation in the Middle East further escalating, the price of crude oil has risen sharply. As a result, prices of fuels have increased by 30 per cent to 50 per cent in South East Asian countries, Sanajaoba said.
Likewise, fuel prices have been hiked by 30 per cent in North America, 20 per cent in Europe and 50 per cent in Africa, he said.
Sanajaoba went on to claim that India is the only country where the sharp rise in crude oil price has not affected the people.
The Modi Government has taken up several measures to spare the people of the country from the impacts of the rise in crude oil prices, he said.
Fuel prices started rising since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war but the Government of India has been working relentlessly to ensure that people of the country do not face the impacts of the rise in crude   oil prices, he continued.
As a part of its measures to keep the fuel prices stable, the Modi Government imposed export duty of Rs 21.50 per litre on diesel and Rs 29.50 per litre on aviation turbine fuel (ATF). Sanajaoba said that such steps taken up by the Government have turned out to be a big relief to the 140 crore citizens of the country.
He said that the Upper House ought to thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and its Government for its people-centric initiatives.
